The January transfer window is officially open so cue the endless speculation, hopeful highs and inevitable lows of a Spurs fan from now until 11pm on February 2nd.

We have already reported that Pochettino is unlikely to sanction the buying of players unless they fit the bill, but as always the papers are suggesting that we are already in the hunt for fresh faces.

    That familiar French face

The saying is that there is no smoke without fire, so the fact that PSG’s Adrien Rabiot is linked with us yet again may hold promise and resonance. Italy’s media outlet Gazzetto dello Sport are reporting that the 19-year-old will sign a sixth month loan deal with ourselves.

The mastermind behind this transfer is none other than Franco Baldini, who has apparently enraged former club AS Roma by helping Spurs pip them to the midfielder. Roma-based newspaper Il Tempo lashed out at Baldini for going under their favoured club’s noses.

Il Tempo had understood that Roma had agreed a permanent deal with Rabiot only for him to sign a new contract. The contract for Raboit was only completed by PSG to ensure they received a decent transfer fee if he leaves – meaning that they are happy for him to go on loan and get more game time at Spurs.

French-based journalist Matt Spiro (@mattspiro) believed the deal to be a success for everyone involved, tweeting: “#PSG's Rabiot set to join #THFC on 6-month loan without option to buy (Gazzetta). Lots of competition for places, but I'd expect him to do well.”

Before adding: “Telling that #PSG seemingly wont include option to buy. Rabiot may yet have future in Paris if Blanc (who's fed up with him) gets boot #THFC.”

Baldini trio set to get the boot

If the Rabiot transfer is a success, Baldini will be unable to rest on his laurels as three of his 2013 summer signings are set to lead our clear-out of potential deadwood. The Daily Mirror believe that Paulinho, Vlad Chirches and Roberto Soldado will be the first three to exit.

Paulinho may be on his way out on loan – to Brazilian champions Cruzerio, with a view to a permanent summer deal. We reported this after Cruzerio director Alexandre Mattos suggested that Paulinho had Cruzerio ‘on his mind’.

In comparison, Chirches and Soldado could be on their way to Italy – the Romanian on loan and the Spaniard on a permanent deal. Chiriches is once again linked with a loan move to AS Roma (will they ever leave our limelight?!) and Soldado to AC Milan. It is believed Robbie to Milan will depend on what money Spurs are offered, as we are unlikely to accept any sort of loan deal.

If these three players are to depart, The Mirror add that this could lead to massive clear-out at Tottenham. The players who could follow are; Aaron Lennon, Kyle Naughton, Younes Kaboul, Etienne Capoue and Emmanuel Adebayor. It is believed that Andros Townsend now has a future at the club after featuring against both United and Chelsea.

Black and white striker for a black and white problem

Many of us have come to the conclusion that it would be foolish to continue the season relying on Harry Kane – who may ‘burn out’ over time. It may come as a relief then that both of Italy’s Panorama.it and Forza Italian Football have suggested that we are in for Juventus Sebastian Giovinco.

The 27-year-old striker’s agent has told the Italian media that his client is in talks with Serie B club Bologna, Tottenham and Arsenal. Giovinco is unable to get any sort of game time in Turin at the moment, and with the fact that his contract expires at the end of the season – you would think that this has ‘Daniel Levy transfer’ written all over it.

Whether Juventus’ number 12 will come to us in January for a cut-price or for free in the summer remains to be seen, but it would undoubtedly be a smart transfer for ourselves. Giovinco is a small pacey striker, who is versatile in his ability to play up front or out wide – meaning he could fit into many of the positions of Pochettino’s front four.

Giovinco is 5ft 4, there's no way he's playing up front by himself in the PL. He's also not as pacy as you'd expect, he's got a decent top speed but slow off the mark and his best season in Italy came playing left wing rather than as a striker.

Maybe he's compeition for Chadli, he's strong, for his size but I definitely don't see him contributing to our striker problems.

I'd be more than happy if we brought in some PL players. Coleman possibly, some midfielders, and another striker. Giovinco is a risk, but there's potential. Still, why not Bony?

Can't see anything in giovinco rumour but interesting Bony was left outside the Swansea squad today but think he is gonna go elsewhere. Berihno started for west from so can't see him coming either! Think that it be better to wait til summer for a striker rather than sign one for the sake of it.. Rabiot another French defensive mid. Great. Like getting socks again for Xmas..

I am a die hard spurs fan Andy Carroll will be perfect for spurs if he stays injury free he has height and can bring the midfielders in the game

  6. Altidore. Altidore. Altidore. He needs a change. We see his potential when he stars for the U.S. national team.

  7. Andy carroll one good game then ten no shows not for spurs.

Of d 5 players intending to let go, ie Lennon, K Naughton, Kaboul, Capoeu, Chiriches,
    KEEP LENNON.
    An attacking team needs runners.

One thing that's often overlooked is how letting go of so many players especially in the Jan. transfer window can also throw the team chemistry off. Soldado is a good player and a hard worker, he plays well when teamed with Kane. The main position we are in NEED of is the central defensive mid, other than that we ought to stop worrying about cutting the roster in half and then bringing in others. Let's start believing in the squad that we have.

I think they should ship out ade, Benoit , naughton , paulinho and chiriches and bring in this young def/ mid as bentaleb of the the African nations and mason injured.
We definitetly need a striker too! God knows who though! Bony would b gd as he can hold up and score the messy goals.
Possibly another strong , quick cb too.
Keep Lennon as he works harder than any of the wingers. We could also recall holtby to do the def mid duties!
    Coys!

Wholesale changes would be suicidal just as Spurs are starting to adapt to Pochettino's training regime and style of play . Recent results have shown Spurs are improving with every game and players like Kane ,Chadli and Erikson can compete with the best when the whole team puts in the effort needed for a full 90 minutes. IMO First priority should be for a top quality quick CH, and CF with every penny spurs have to spend to be spent on these two players. not devided on 4 or five bargain buys .

See we have been linked with paul Georges Ntep. Probably just media talk but its all part of the fun of the transfer market so checked him out on you tube as u do. Looks a talent. Predominantly a left winger but as a right footer can play either wing and also up top. As u would expect of an African born he is quick n direct very quick in fact like a young saha and as a French youngster who's been involved at auxerre technically good too similar to a hazard. Good strike on him and decent in the air.
If lennon does move on a winger is a priority as is a centre bk and cf to replace Ade n kaboul who look to have had their days. Schaar from Basle is available on a free in the summer so could be a cheap buy in this window to partner JV. Emenike or Adriano to back up Kane with bony looking out of our price range until we ship some out!

If you want AC you will need Big Sam also, and after a few games of hoofing the ball forward towards ACs head, WHL will be empty. I suggest they both stay where they are and in a couple of seasons they will be playing exactly the same 'football' in an empty athletics stadium.

bentaleb, mason, stambouli, capoue, Paulinho, dembele... What we really need is defensive mid? We NEED a striker and a winger lol not more midfielders

SHAQIRI please. Can play across the front four and is obviously talented. Schar or inigo martinez. I like Sevilla's Krchowiak and for a striker Kiesling or streller

Its simple for me.. One striker out, (ade or soldado) to be replaced by benteke/bony/jay Rodriguez. One winger out (Townsend or Lennon) to be replaced by konoplyanka/el shaarawy/depay or even a Munain or Bernard. And a defensive mid or 2 out (paulinho, capoue) to get schneiderlin or the polish DM from Sevilla. Then axe some other deadwood.. Ie kaboul, assou etc.
