Tottenham are supposedly in for their second goalkeeper of the transfer window as The Times Gary Jacob has linked us with young Reading stopper Alex McCarthy.

McCarthy is best known for his unbelievable performance for Reading against Liverpool in their last campaign in the Premier League, and kept an impressive 12 clean sheets last season too.

He would join Michel Vorm in pulling on a Spurs goalkeeper shirt for the first time this summer, with the Dutch international ‘keeper signing from Swansea City along with Ben Davies in early August for around £3.5million.

The likelihood would be than McCarthy would go out on loan immediately after signing for Tottenham, with a return to Reading the most likely destination. However this transfer would have a much deeper meaning in the long term.

The signing of a young goalkeeper in the side’s current state would mean that opportunities to even sit on the bench would be limited, with Hugo Lloris immovable in-between the sticks and Brad Friedel and Michel Vorm waiting in the ranks.

The signing of McCarthy would point towards one or two departures in the goalkeeping area, maybe not this season but certainly the next.

    Bale, Modric… Hugo?

Veteran Brad Friedel is nearing retirement but it is the interest in French number 1 Lloris that would have the Spurs faithful crying into their matchday programmes. Moneybags Paris Saint-Germain have expressed an interest in bringing the national team captain home to Ligue 1 and the are in the position to offer money that simply cannot be turned down.

McCarthy is certainly a talent, his performances earning himself an England call up for games against Ireland and Brazil in May 2013, and Queens Park Rangers are also interested.

This.is the point he would go out on loan until the opportunity of first team football is available. But to be fair it is prime time for transfer nonsense so everything with a pinch of salt until confirmed is my moto... Come on you spurs!!!!!!
