Tottenham yesterday announced a rather shrewd piece of January business, with youth-team graduate Ryan Mason extending his current contract.

The 22-year-old had had to be patient in his ambition to play Premier League football, but has been rewarded for strong performances this season with a new deal that keeps him at White Hart Lane until 2020.

After spending time out on loan at Swindon Town, Millwall, Doncaster and Yeovil, Mauricio Pochettino has shown faith in the young central midfielder this term, who has featured in 18 games throughout 2014-15.

Mason has struck up a promising central midfield partnership with Nabil Bentaleb and admitted that he is delighted to extend his stay with Spurs.

"I'm buzzing about it. I'm delighted and I can't wait to crack on now,” Mason stated after penning the deal.

"I appreciate the length of the contract shows a lot of faith in me and hopefully I can keep progressing and stay at the club longer than the contract."

Mason’s contract extension is an excellent move by Spurs and just rewards for a player that has progressed significantly over the last six months.

With Pochettino trying to build a young side that can grow together and challenge consistently for silverware, Mason’s role in the club’s future looks significant.

Spurs are right to reward the player after his recent form and now must look to offering Harry Kane and potentially Bentaleb new and improved contracts to keep them satisfied at the North London club.

    Tom Carroll

Meanwhile, another young Spurs midfielder is in high demand after impressive performances while out on loan.

Tom Carroll has done well with Swansea this term and the Welsh club’s manager Garry Monk has revealed that he would like to keep the 22-year-old at the Liberty Stadium after his loan spell ends this summer.

“It’s not something we have discussed yet – but we are not averse to it,” Monk told Wales Online.

“We have spoken about Tom’s progress here and he has done well for us. He is young, has great potential, but we will likely talk more towards the end of the season to see if there are any options towards a longer deal.

“I have not spoken to Tom about it as I do not want him to have any distractions. I want him to worry about his football. Come the end of the season we need to hear from him and both clubs so we will assess it then.”

The England under-21 international's story is very similar to that of Mason’s; he has had to spend time at Leyton Orient, Derby and QPR on loan and has progressed as a result.

Spurs should think twice before considering offloading the gifted midfielder, who has shown this season in 11 Premier League appearances for Swansea that he is more than good enough to play at the top level.

Tottenham could welcome Carroll back next season as something of a new signing given his progress, with another youth academy graduate in the first-team reckoning.

Given the questionable impact of a lot of the foreign players that have ended up at White Hart Lane over the years, putting faith in the players that have come through the club’s ranks seems like a sensible path for the club.

One club wants Carroll = 'high demand'!
Impressive performances is an over estimation.
Bottom line is he isn't going to be good enough to achieve what we want, makes perfect sense to sell him.

Would this be the same "Not good enough" as a certain Harry Kane? I'm not saying he's going to be amazing and will be a main stay in the midfield for years to come, but it's this knee jerk reaction. Would anyone in pre season have said Kane and Mason have been first team regulars this season? No. Lots of people were saying, some still saying, that Kane wasn't good enough and look what's happened. I've heard a lot of good things about Carroll and would like to see him given a chance like Mason was.
