Man United want Kyle Walker - why we should tell them where to go

The latest transfer rumour surrounding Tottenham sees Kyle Walker being linked with a potential £20 million move to Manchester United.

Various British media sources have claimed that the Old Trafford outfit will look to pilfer our right-back in the summer as they look to bolster their wide options.

Although United could use improvement at right-back and have been linked with the likes of Nathaniel Clyne, Dani Alves and other players in that position, just how much credence there is in the reports stating they want Walker remains to be seen.

If there is any truth in it, my first reaction is that Spurs should tell United where to go, for a number of reasons.

Firstly, we have had to sit by while the likes of Teddy Sheringham, Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov have moved north in the past, despite being critical members of our team at the time that United have come sniffing around.

Although Louis van Gaal’s side may well be the most successful club in English football history, gone are the days where Spurs should be manhandled by United.

We have just as good a chance as finishing in the top four this season as they do and have shown in recent meetings between the teams that we can more than hold our own.

For United to think that they can just snatch up one of our first-team regulars is simply not on.

Secondly, despite a section of the Spurs fanbase probably not agreeing, Walker is a key player for the club.

There have been question marks over his positional sense and concentration, and I’ll admit that the full-back has been the culprit of costly mistakes in the past.

However, the club have a young starting XI currently and Walker is one of the more experienced players in it.

On his day he is one of the best attacking full-backs in the division and has all the raw attributes to become a top defender - he will only improve.

The club have put a lot of time and effort into developing Walker into an England international since he moved to White Hart Lane in 2009 and at 24 years old the defender has his best days ahead of him.

There is no reason to suggest that Walker cannot be a solid member of a successful Spurs team for years to come.

Finally, with the frailness of back-up options showcased this season and DeAndre Yedlin not ready for first-team football just yet, finding a player to replace Walker would be very tricky.

The likelihood is that the club would need to dip into the foreign market once more, which has been something of a lottery for Spurs over the last couple of seasons.

The likes of Ryan Fredericks is prospering while out on loan, but for the time being Walker is our undisputed number one right-back and getting someone of his quality would be a major headache this summer.

Spurs need to add one or two more new faces in the summer to bolster an improving side, but keeping all the young stars that we currently have is just as important.

It is yet another case of Man Utd "tapping up" via the media. They have done it to us before and their friends in the media are trying it out again. So far this year we have seen headlines about the Mancs wanting Bale - ok not our problem any more, but then it was Loris - not once but several times. Now it is Walker. What could be enticing about moving up north and never seeing the sun again? It's not that you could even really call Man Utd a team the way they play now, and who would really want to work under van Gaal? He seems mostly clueless - just look at his choice in barbers!

Great article. I am so sick of this and that club looking to sign one of our players mostly based on speculation.

If Manure is willing to shell out 20 mil for Walker, I say cash in. Walker may have pace but he is a crappy defender, always caught up on the wrong side. Bad positing player and when he running up front, his crosses are far from quality. Gives the ball away in the mid field area and when tracking back , almost always caught out of position and gives away too many free kicks. He need to get rid of both Kyle and Danny no idea what to do with a football Rose.

These two are our weakest links... Get rid of them. Please.........

Double or treble his salary, playing with a star studded squad (I'm sure they will spend another 150 million next window if needed), probable CL football etc etc.......why ever would he leave?

Walker may be a very good RB but he isn´t irreplacable. As a chairman, I´d be happy to cash in for 20 mill. That said, I wouldn´t want to cash in on him this summer because, as you noted, there´s no readily available replacement.

Take the 20 mil, promote fredricks get yedlin in as understudy make them compete for the starters spot, give Poch and Mitchell the 20 mil to reinvest where its desperately needed.
Walker is good on his day but mostly his pace saves his poor reading of the game, hes also injury prone, not great at whipping the ball in either.
Like ali said hes good but hes not irreplaceable.
As we work on a glorified swapsies budget we could really do with 20 mil invested in the 1st team and id rather someone like walker was sold over eriksen & Loris etc

This summer if Spurs are missing on CL and red Devils are in it Kyle Walker will be as good as gone. He is replaceable, though, I agree with Felon82. He is a core player responsible for Spurs improvement of late, but not like Eriksen, for instance, who may be looking for playing with CL team next season as well. Walker's main attraction to van Gaal is his ability to play both full-back and wing-back. Van Gaal employs 4 back for now, but would like to play 3/5 back. Hence interest in Kyle. I convinced Spurs will be playing in CL in 2015-16, so the issue will die on its own with no need for confrontation suggested by the article.

    Dear post Beetroot Head MUFC,

Did you really believe you could pull off all that hokey BS for all those years and get off scot-free [if you'll pardon the pun]?

£300 million and Blind or GTF :)
