Tottenham are gearing up for the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg against Sheffield United on Wednesday night, with winning the first leg in style at White Hart Lane the objective to land one foot in the final.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team selection will be of interest and the Argentine trainer will be tempted to field striking star Harry Kane to ensure we get the much-needed victory on home soil.

    Kane

The England under-21 striker has netted 18 goals in all competitions this season for Spurs and has been the revelation in Tottenham’s campaign thus far.

The Mirror claimed last night that Kane is set to be rewarded for his efforts with an increase in salary, with the centre forward’s basic wages set to be boosted from £20,000 per week to £30,000.

This clause is set to be activated when Kane makes a set number of first-team appearances for the side, which he is closing in on.

The salary hike is thoroughly deserved for the striker, but Spurs should start to be thinking about giving their new star man an updated contract.

Kane may well have signed a new five-year contract in the summer, but improved terms for the striker and an extension on the length of the player’s deal would be a canny move.

Given the astronomical wages that Adebayor is earning to sulk on the sidelines, Kane deserves to be paid what he is worth.

    Soldado

Roberto Soldado’s future continues to be a point of contention in the press, with both Roma and Bayer Leverkusen linked with a move for the Spaniard in the last 12 hours.

The Serie A side are facing the potential prospect of Mattia Destro leaving the Stadio Olimpico this January and calciomercato.it claimed that Soldado was one name in the mix to replace him.

Meanwhile, both Bild and The Mirror have stated that the Spanish striker is wanted by Leverkusen, who are eager to bolster their attacking ranks.

However, with Pochettino recently claiming that there won’t be much business done at the club this transfer window, selling Soldado is simply not an option unless another striker is brought to White Hart Lane.

The former Valencia man got the opportunity to start against Sunderland on Saturday, but put in an underwhelming performance and is clearly still short of confidence.

    Bentaleb

Meanwhile crucial Tottenham midfielder Nabil Bentaleb played for country Algeria in their African Cup of Nations opener against South Africa, with his side coming from 1-0 down to win 3-1.

Bentaleb played all 90 minutes of the clash, with whoscored.com giving the holding midfielder the rating of 7.0 for the performance.

He completed 35 of his 40 passes (88 per cent), won his only aerial duel and made two tackles in the victory.

Spurs fans will be glad that Bentaleb got through the game unscathed, but with Algeria winning their first game it looks likely that the midfielder’s absence from White Hart Lane is set to be extended as his nation look like real contenders for the competition.
