Do we want Lukaku in the summer?

Not for the first time, Tottenham have today been linked with a big-money move for Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku.

The 21-year-old has ruffled a few feathers at Everton over the last 48 hours as an interview where he claimed to want to sign for ‘a top club’ emerged, enraging the Goodison Park fans.

The Daily Mail today suggest that Spurs could well look to make the most of the disharmony between player and club, with a potential offer for Lukaku on the cards.

Just how much truth there is in this story remains to be seen, but even if Spurs do want the Belgian there is an increasing argument against signing him.

There is no doubting that Mauricio Pochettino will be in the market for a new striker this summer, with Emmanuel Adebayor’s tenure having run its course and Roberto Soldado cutting a forlorn figure on the outskirts.

On his day Lukaku has shown that he has the potential to be one of the most devastating strikers in English football.

With pace and power to burn, the Belgian has cut opposition defences to ribbons during loan spells at West Brom and Everton, but has been a different player this season at the Merseyside club.

Seven goals represent a poor return for a player that cost a club-record £28 million in the summer, with the striker suffering along with the rest of the Toffees squad in an underwhelming campaign for the club.

No longer the unstoppable force of days gone by, Lukaku has even been shunted out into wide areas by Roberto Martinez at times to try and reinvigorate the attacker’s fortunes.

Currently not on form, Lukaku’s limitations have also been on show.

His first touch has been far from perfect this season and the striker has been guilty of giving the ball away on too many occasions.

His work rate and commitment have also been questioned by a section of the Everton support, while his outspoken attitude is clearly a concern given his latest comments.

Having been given so much support by Everton to then turn on the club with these stinging comments gives an insight into Lukaku’s personality.

If we break the bank to sign him over the summer and then fail to qualify for the Champions League is he going to come out with the ‘I want to play for a top club’ line??

All-in-all, Lukaku at his best is a devastating proposition and making an audacious move for him this summer could well be a masterstroke by Tottenham.

With a handful of other Belgian players at the club and his attributes potentially complementing rather than limiting Harry Kane, he could be the player to take Spurs to the next level.

However, with Lukaku seemingly coming with issues, baggage galore and a £20m+ transfer fee, he also represents a significant gamble.

Lukakus comments are basically what most players think and feel they all want to play for a top club Everton are a big club as are Spurs but both are living off former Glory and are not in the Top club bracket at the moment so its hardly a jump up move for him.
In a struggling side hes still out scored both Soldado and Adebayor this season put together and he has all the atributes to play the lone striker to ease the pressure on Kane. And both Kane and Lukaku up top would cause havoc and not a combination any CB pairing would look forward to.
For me there is only 2 strikers now that Bony has gone Citeh that we should be intent on signing Lukaku &/or Benteke. All 3 shouldv been top of the list when we were throwing Bale money about like confetti and wasting it on Soldado who was always going to fail as he lacks all the basics for the Premier League.
Still to buy him would mean spending money which we all know doesnt happen anymore because we work on a glorified swapsies budget.

  4. You are welcome to him. We would be lucky to recoup our 28 million. The lad is deluded. Has potential but doubt he will ever be a world beater. He thinks he is which is his problem. Touch of a brick wall. Little to no skill. Goes missing in many games. I hope he proves me wrong but I very much doubt it.

Along with Benteke (No goals since when) Pelle, Graziano, Lukaku aint scored a lot since first season in PL.
Maybe we got off lightly by not signing more Adebayors !!! No No No ! Remember how he (Lukaku) only wanted to sign for a Champions League club (like Everton?????).

Though agreeing that he can be devastating on his day, he would cost us too much money; his attitude also reminds me of younger version of Adebayor.
    Better look elsewhere

Why does he rate himself so highly? He's poor in the air, first touch like a clearance . Big waste of money spurs fans. . . you don't want him !!!

I admire the optimism of this thread title, but there's very little chance of you signing Lukaku in the summer.

Firstly, he hasn't asked to leave, contrary to what a few lying rags of tabloids have printed.
He gave one interview to a Belgian newspaper in which he said that he was glad to have to turned down Juventus and Wolfsburg to sign for Everton and that he was greatly enjoying his time with us. He said that 'one day he'd like to play for a top team'. Obviously the latter part was the only part the British press reported, and it obviously hasn't gone down too well with Everton fans. But it's not the same as 'asking to leave', nowhere close.

Secondly, with all due respect, Tottenham aren't that much different than Everton, current league position in February aside. Neither of us are in the Champions League. If Lukaku ever does leave it would be to a side that is in the Champions League and can offer him that year in, year out.

Thirdly, there's no way Everton would be a willing seller. Lukaku's form hasn't been great this season, but up to this faux pas he has enjoyed a magnificent relationship with the fans, and the mythical 'Lukaku has a bad attitude' nonsense hasn't reared its head at all. He hasn't displayed a bad attitude, he's been great with the fans, and there's no issues with Lukaku behind the scenes.

Hope there are better options to spend 25 million or more on than Lukaku. Poch no doubtedly scouring the world for a new striker for the summer. Coys.

Not sure what happened there,it seems to have re-quoted the Everton's fan message. We all love the toffees a fine football club, and we all appreciate ambition,as a player should be,but what makes lukaku think he is actually good enough to play for a regular CL team. He hasn't proved anything yet,and from what I have seen of him,he looks like the proverbial bull in a china shop to me,surely you need much more finesse than bulldozing to play CL football.
I think Spurs should stay well clear of him,am not saying he won't come good, but he won't come cheap and that is far too much of a risk to me.

He was at a "big" club,Chelsea and couldn't hack it.Both him and Benteke would be a waste of money in my view.Latter day Heskeys with great physical attributes but lacking basic ball control and flatter to deceive.Leave alone.

We need two strikers i think in the summer. Probably a big foreign buy, but what do you guys think of the 25 year old ex bricklayer Charlie Austin as the second striker. 13 prem goals in 20 games, and hes English. QPR bought him for 4 million and i guess he'd cost more now but nothing like Lukaku. Worth a punt ? Coys.

Very disrespectful to Everton, we should not bother , we need committed players ,not someone who apparently dreamed of playing for chelski when they signed him ,shows he was money motivated. Everton paid way over the top, and I dought we are interested. Both Spurs and Everton need committed players as we can't waist money on players who think they are to good for our clubs.

Charlie Austin a good shout but Ings
would be a better shout as he will cocompliment Kane more as they could play as a pair but also each can play as a number 10 in different systems. I would buy a third striker who can play out wide such as a mirrales Rodriguez or depay to give the squad more in depth strength. I think this team is only four players from being a regular top four side. A
Left bk centre half centre mid and a flexible forward/winger.

not sure he'll fit in at Spurs! He has loads of talent but he's a long way from making good. Levy won't spend £28 million on Lukaku or any other striker for that matter. Wilmots caught a lot heat for starting Origi inBrazil because he outperformed Lukaku during the tournament. He needs stay put and weather storm so he can become good
