With Tottenham clearly putting a focus on young players and giving prodigious talents their chance to thrive in the first team, the club have been linked with two more teenagers over the last 24 hours.

Both Cagliari midfielder Godfred Donsah and Sporting Lisbon youngster Bubacar Djalo have reportedly caught Spurs’ eye, with potential to bring both to White Hart Lane in the summer.

    Donsah

Godfred Donsah has been making waves at Serie A side Cagliari this season, breaking into Gianfranco Zola’s first team despite only being 18 years old.

The Ghanaian midfielder was on Palermo’s books for two years before moving to the Sardinian outfit last summer and has made 15 appearances in Serie A this season.

Respected Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio revealed last month that the North London club were keeping an eye on Donsah and recently stipulated that Spurs were still interested.

However, Di Marzio has stated that Manchester City are also in the hunt for the African’s signature and sent a scout to watch him in last night’s 2-1 defeat to Inter.

    Djalo

Meanwhile, Sporting Lisbon younger Djalo has been mentioned as a possible target by The Mirror, who claim that the club want to sign the midfielder this summer for a reduced fee.

Djalo, also 18, plays for the Portuguese club’s under-19’s side and is another defensive midfielder that has been touted as the ‘new Paul Pogba’.

With the young star out of contract in the summer, Spurs could well land him on a free transfer and only have to pay the Lisbon-based side a nominal amount of compensation.

William Carvalho has made his name as a top defensive midfielder at Sporting, with Djalo said to be cut from the same cloth.

    Verdict

Just how much truth in these reports remains to be seen, but I’d prefer Spurs to be linked with up-and-coming stars that are in their teens and can be developed rather than established foreign players that have already learned their trade and arrive with big reputations and extortionate wages.

With the likes of Ryan Mason, Nabil Bentaleb, Tom Carroll and Dele Alli all in the reckoning for a first-team place in the heart of midfield next season, perhaps an older head is also needed, but if these two young stars are good enough then Spurs should certainly swoop.

I think a cheeky bid for the 'youthful' Xavi Hernandez would be much more appropriate. It's great having young players, especially when they come through our youth system, but they need someone of Xavi's stature to keep them improving.
