Pochettinos football prior to him getting the sack was abysmal for 18months in the league , I don't know what you're expecting JM to do with the dregs of someone else's tenure which was broken an ran into the ground?
His appointment 1st and foremost was to steady a rapidly sinking ship and getting a team to function again.
It was obvious from the off that we are/were leaking ridiculous goals from numerous serial individual error prone players & when Kane & Son got injured what JM did was made us difficult to beat.
As I have to keep saying we have such a poorly put together squad that you could put Klopp or Pep in charge no 1 is playing good football with championship level full backs, a hideous misshapen midfield of averageness, a supporting cast of Lamela Moura etc.
Since Kane & Son return so do the results, but until we improve the quality at FB , DM , Playmaker etc then your hoping to make wine out of water.
Let's see what happens this window if JM hides like the puppet did and we don't strengthen significantly in these areas then he's on a hiding to nothing.

But that’s the point, we weren’t boring...we were either decent or terrible but not boring. We didn’t play Sunday league style defend deep and let everyone else have the ball?

We played with high possession that occasionally had forward passes. Sometimes we scored a few, sometimes we conceded a few.

I think it’s plain dishonest to make out that we are in anyway more interesting to watch than over any of the last 5 seasons.

We are now thoroughly terrible to watch but grinding out results...that’s completely different to the last 9 months of Poch which was also different to the previous 3 seasons of Poch.

As I said before, I’ll be keen to hear your excuses at the end of next season when we are again hovering around 6th with a season full of 1 goal differences and terrible performances.

Happy to eat humble pie if we start playing good football but I’m not sure that will happen so the risk is low

Very true. There is no rewriting history particularly when the statistical footprint remains for any who care to inform themselves. The quality of football dropped off mid 2018/19 but at no point were we getting consistently slapped about as is often the case these days.

Full credit to Jose for grinding out 6th place in the end but it's been like pulling teeth for the most part. Is this sort of football sustainable? ie. will we be able to keep getting results next season with this approach and these performances? Doubtful but there is a method to Jose's madness.

At a guess the tactics/strategy in 2018/2019 was:
Keep possession until the opposition is bored to sleep and then pounce. The risk is making a mistake thus allowing the opposition to quickly counter-attack and quick counter-attacks are often very very dangerous. For some reason the ones making the high-risk pass were the FBs and that makes the counter-attacks even more dangerous.
And the tactics/strategy in 2019/2020 appeared to be:
Give possession away and when there is a turnover then quickly counter-attack.

Both tactics/strategies are for me less than exciting.
Ideally I'd see some fast movement of the players and fast movement of the ball which would cause the opposition to be uncertain and then using their uncertainty to strike. In my opinion then at the moment Spurs does not have the players who are capable of doing that.

I didn't mean to imply that Spurs under Mourinho has been exciting to watch.
I do believe Spurs might have become more boring as fewer goals are scoring against Spurs but I also believe that Spurs have not become less exciting going forward. On balance that means that I believe Spurs have gained more points and therefore was not involved in a relegation scrap and instead managed to get to the EL.

We will see what happens for the next season. The defending has improved which might mean that instead of spending money on defenders then all focus can be on getting better players for attacking.

My thoughts about the game in isolation, rather than the previous 7 months. It was shite, totally. It was SO boring. Whilst I'm a fan until the day I die, the season ticket will be at risk if this style of play continues in 2020-21. By real fear is "what is going to change it"..... no new signings of note if any, same weaknesses, JM's playing style.

Was in my imagination or was watching the ball feeding out from the back even more painful and slower than normal. I nearly fell asleep.

Regarding 6th and Europa, I don't see that as a plus. It might be financially if you progress to the knock out stages, but otherwise the historic performances linked to the Thursday/Sunday match thing is not the best for the side at this time. 5,000 mile round trips are of zero value to the club or the fans, period.

If 2019-20 was a drain, then look out for more of the same this season.

Well, thank God we weren't getting 'consistently slapped about' in Pochettino's abysmal final year, so that we can erase our worst-ever home defeat from the record books, along with minor slip-ups like the 3-0 at Brighton. It's a seriously weird attitude that prefers losing 7-2 to drawing 1-1, but I suppose it takes all sorts.

If you want to watch end to end football I'd suggest going to watch another side for a few years. Jose isn't here to entertain he's here to get results. In the end poch delivered neither it was tedious. I went City earlier in season and we could not get out our own box let alone our half. If you find that exciting then bully for you. Nothing exciting about getting turned over each week for me. Let Jose have full control over signings I'll guarantee he delivers top 3 next year and maybe just maybe a trophy as much as that will upset some.

True but history also suggests Jose will win it... which would be welcome as long as we don't have to watch.

Why change a winning team? Why bring back Dier into the starting 11? Unless Sanchez had a injury that decision made no sense. If Jm is going to have a favourite then he better pick a better player than Dier to be his pet. Dier missed 4 games due to his own bad behaviour and walks straight back into the team. As usual he falls asleep and the man he is marking wins the header that leads to Palace goal.

When push comes to shove that back 4 will struggle to make top4 and win sliverware just too many mistakes in the players as individuals.

Serge gets a lot of stick, however, he can hold his own as he did vs Zaha. Davies on the other hand is a wingers dream, i'm just glad zaha didn't switch wings.

Jm has done ok, however, the football lacks cohesion due to not having a true ball winning DCM.

    Funny you should mention that...

Spurs ironically played very well in the first half against Bayern... Son could well have had a hat-trick in the first 20 if I recall correctly but instead scored just once. We conceded on the stroke of half time to be trailing when we should have been leading and the rest is history. It can happen. Brazil got pumped 7-1 at home in a World Cup semi final... the Germans can be ruthless like that.

You need to consider the difference between performance and results in football because they are not as inextricably linked as you would like to think and that is the argument here.

You're guaranteeing 3rd? Interesting. Jose will have control over transfers within a budget.

It's not out of the question... we still have some very good players though some glaring deficiencies as well. You're right though it is not going to be pretty to watch either way.

We've been on the wrong end of some scorelines that are still talked-about, such as the 3-5 against United under Hoddle, or the 3-4 against ten man City under Pleat, and I've no doubt that the neutrals (let alone both types of Manc) thoroughly enjoyed both, but I didn't, and I doubt that many Spurs fans did, either. Fifty-odd years ago, Spurs offered style as well as success, but two league cups in pushing 30 years are a shocking return for the loyalty shown by so many, and I'd happily take Mourinho-style success over Pochettino-style failure any day of the week. Whether we'll actually get it, with Levy as paymaster, is another matter.

Looks like hojbjerg is really close to being sealed. Jose will sign hard working functional players. Square pegs Square holes who will improve the starting 11. Wilson could be next to follow.

The idea is to win obviously... preferably with style.

So that is the question... how many are prepared to sell Blanchflower's soul for the taste of a tin cup? Quite a few it seems. Personally I'm not sold.

I welcome any player who would put Winks one step closer to the bench on a permanent basis (harsh I know as he is a good lad who works hard). Wilson would be an excellent addition to the squad.

    The BBC pre-match:
    https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/54045208

First match of the EPL-season, two different approaches to transfers: Spurs tried to strengthen weak areas while Everton went for big name signing and replacing the midfield.

Hoping for a 2-0 win for Spurs with Son and Kane scoring.

A 3rd choice GK (not wanted by West ham or Burnley)
A DM to plug the gaping hole in the side since Wanyama broke down 2 years ago.
    And a RB.

No replacement still for CE, Janssen, Llorente, Jan. (And arguably Dembele)

Lamela still stealing a living at the club.

    Zero depth, zero ambition

    Banter club

Spurs needed a ball winning Cm, could do with adding one more so PEH on paper looks like a good signing.
Is Doherty an upgrade on Serge? I would say yes going forward, however, not sure how good Doherty is at defending.

My biggest concern is a Dier/ Toby Cb pairing i don't think that pairing is good enough, Sanchez/Toby to me is a better combination.

Today's match with no preseason is about being in good shape.
I think it will be spurs 2-1 or 1-1 draw. Coys

I was hoping that Mourino had worked out how to get a tune out of this bunch of no hopers but I was wrong.Todays performance was by far the worst under his management so far.His judgement of a footballer is not what I expected from someone who has won so much. How can he continually start with Winks and Moura who should not be in any first eleven.I can’t say any body in the squad would have got more than 3 out of ten today. There did not appear to be any formation and when we went one down where was the urgency and passion.I know it’s our first game but Hojbjerg was appalling and docherty looked okay but must be wondering why he left Wolves.I hope Mr Levy was watching what you get for buying quality because Allan. Doucoure andRodrigues looked to be playing a different game to us.I personally don’t expect Mourino to last the season. We will probably struggle on Wednesday if we play like that. How much longer are the faithful prepared to put up with this dross .If we were winning it would probably be bearable but if we have to lose act least play and try to entertain,..Would United fans put up with this tripe .I don’t think so.Please Mr Edwards say you have had enough and sell up
