I despair at your thinking Spurporter if you think quality players from the past wouldn't have adapted to today's football given the same tactically aware coaches and the training .Are you telling me that Dier would be a better player than Pele or Maradona or cruff or even our own glen hoddle o me a favour

When Mp first joined spurs bought shrewdly, Dier, Toby, Trippier, wimmer, Dele, Son, and Wanyama all cost 62m. The buys that didn't work out like Fazio, stambuli and Njie were sold within a year of joining. This model has not been followed since spurs signed Sisoko.
There is a big problem with the spurs transfer committee/ scouting department it's not about money it's about spotting talent. I don't expect spurs to be buying players for 60m, however, there is talent out there that can be had from 20-50m that will improve spurs. The Lester RB peraria would have been a better replacement for walker than serge, spurs were meant to be in for him but he ended up at Lester.
Spurs don't speculate in transfer market so they have to be proactive, and sell the average players who are over performing for more money than they are worth, and moving on the injury prone players, sometimes that means taking a hit on a player to raise funds to buy.

To be honest the era of 25m players being good enough are long gone. When you think championship players like bowen cost that much. The odd bargain you may find I'll agree but you look that wolves have had to cough up 30m for jiminez who has only 15 goals. He's a player I like but woukd he be good enough.. Really... An improvement on janssen and llorente he may be but would he really push Kane any??
Like you say we've had bargains in the past but I'd say wanyama and Toby both poch signings who he worked with and knew there buy out clause price. Others alli dier eriksen Jan modric berba bale scouted early and picked up cheap before interest from bigger clubs but missed out on many more thru dithering watching and watching ie hazard auba suarez to name a few.
I'd guess that a few the names mentioned cheap French nobodies with poor records in the French pub league were the signings of a certain Paul Mitchell as was janssen..
Probably pick up sessagnon for 25m right now given the season he's had but he's still only 18 far more advanced than a certain Mr bale at that age and could be coached into either a left bk, left attack or a wing bk at this stage.
Wan bissaka you wouldn't get much change from 50m imo but we'll worth it. Not seen many of any get the better of him yet. 6 ft plus already, quick strong and equally as good defending as going forward which is rare for one so young.
If we are to carry on with this bk 3 nonsense that's cost us oh so many points this season we need better wing bks and both could do that.
Onto centre mid where I think is the area we've struggling for numbers and quality since wanyama downed tools and Dembele left tanguy ndombele seems to be the next big thing but numbers quoted are 70m but if that's the market rate so what? Liverpool paid that for van dyke and Alison a similar fee and are now on the brink of titles. They paid 40 to 50m on two players each who have warmed a bench all season but its brought the best out in milner Henderson and wijnaldum looking over thier shoulders. Get in there now and get the deal done.

Ahead of that I'd look at Nicholas pepe around 30m scored 17 goals and 8 assists from the wing for lille driving them towards a CL spot stats only bettered by mbappe. Then there is luka jovic on loan at eintract frankfurt from benfica a notorious selling club second in the bundesliga chart to lewondowski aged only 21 years Big string unit similar to Kane.

Wait, aren't you changing the target now? You were talking about 1960 and now have moved into Cruyff and Maradona times almost 20 years forward. Football changed over that time the most. They still played on the hard bumpy pitches with prominent bald spots in in 6 foot boxes, but the game gained a different structure that period, became Total Football, first shown to the world at 1974 by world Cup champion Netherland. Those guys would have a chance, but just a chance.
Pele, the greatest forward of all times, would never have a ball playing against Spurs of today. Dier, Sissoco and Winks would keep the ball away from 1956 World Champion Brazil and Pele would wonder around hopelessly waiting for a pass. It is very hard to score without ball... Why do you think Gooners lost to Toffies today? Because their scorers O'Silly, La Gazette or Obama-Young couldn't get the ball.
Why don't you compare all those football legends to Kane? Or Son? You comparison of those superstars to current Spurs midfielders is like apple to oranges. Or better yet wife to mistress. Both are women, yet vastly different. Mistress is sexier, but no one would marry her. Wife, on the other hand, cooks and provides more frequent sex. One has to have both!! ;-)

The last time spurs made it to cl last 8 everybody knew that RM would win the tie, however, there was a feeling that spurs were on the up.
This time around the team is better defensively than the one that lost to RM and have a chance of causing an upset. I am still not convinced by the city defence and feel if put under pressure they will concede. Spurs have had a week to prepare, while city were playing so there is no reason why spurs shouldn't be able to press them into making mistakes. Coys

Come on, someone should have made a comment by now

Great result but really crappy re Kane but I think his absence motivates Sonny

Thought we were the better team- ridiculous penalty call- defenders are going to have to have their arms inside their shirts soon!

Hugo- the penalty king! And no flappy arms!

100% home record this season and no goals conceded!!

    COYS

MP got the set up and tactics spot on, spurs didn't over press leaving gaps in midfield, and weren't afraid to attack when they had opportunities to get forward. A very mature all round display and not conceding a goal gives spurs a decent chance of winning the tie. The away leg must be about scoring a goal. Coys

Great result , for me this match was all about the clean sheet which we got and the goal was a bonus.
Now they have to score but still need to be apprehensive about us hitting them on the counter at theirs which puts us in a great position.
But it's only HT in the tie and as we have seen numerous times us get a result and think we've done something only for us to take our eye of the ball and it come back to bite us. So we're gonna need a professional attitude Vs both Huddersfield and City again.
Bad news about Kane although I don't think he's been fully fit anyway so could do him well not being rushed back, of course it makes work harder on us but we probably had our best run all season when he was out so hopefully Sonny and others can step up again.

    COYS!

Kane is his own worst enemy, 3 out of his 4 ankle injuries have been caused by going for balls he didn't need to go for and over extending himself.

Bit harsh on Kane. It’s his harassment that often gets a turnover and leads to a chance. You can’t expect someone to play half hearted. Conversely it maybe that he should have been off for a few weeks longer to make sure it was really strong when he cane back

Agree his work rate and application is what sets him apart from the others. Definitely seems to be an underlying issue here with his ankle injuries and maybe needs to rest for longer but in my experience some folk after ankle injury often to have problems throughout thier careers.

We can beat Citizens without Kane, but I now highly doubtful we will make top 4 without him. So we need to win UCL in order to qualify for next season UCL. COYS!!!

I also hopelessly awaiting FA to review the video and suspend Fernandinho for shoving down Kane's head. Twice. Should be a Red Card via VAR.

Problem with that is that then they need to look at Rose’s stiff arm payback which was lovely! But also probably warrants red

Fernandinho should definitely seen a red after VaR and although it's good to see your forward fighting and hussling the challenge on Delph in the context of things was OTT and unnecessary and now he and possibly the team are gonna suffer.
