Spurs are set to make a move for Newcastle striker Ayoze Perez, according to numerous sources.

Perez would provide crucial attacking support for Harry Kane, who is currently the sole centre-forward at Spurs, and the 22-year-old certainly fits the Pochettino mould. The pacey forward has two goals this season, a more than decent return considering his struggling Magpies side’s troubles in front of goal.

The Spaniard has revealed that Poch was desperate to sign him in the summer window, as he searched frantically for some kind of attacking back-up for Kane – who has since found it hard to reproduce the form which saw him score more than 30 goals last season.

“There was interest from Tottenham, especially Pochettino. It’s a very nice compliment for me.” Perez claims.

“In the end it did not work because Newcastle considered me too important and would not let me leave.”

And in that comes the biggest stumbling block in the deal. Newcastle’s reluctance to sell could see the asking price for the striker rise above £15million – a fee that tight-walleted Daniel Levy is unlikely to bow to.

But with Kane’s failures in front of goal and a frightening lack of replacements in his position, coupled with apparent interest from the likes of free-spending Manchester United, Levy’s hand may be forced in order to pull off the audacious January deal.

    Alternatives

It would come as a cut-price alternative to Saido Berahino, who has scored just one goal more than Perez this season. The England striker was close to a deal with Spurs in the summer but the £25million move was eventually blocked by West Bromwich Albion leaving Spurs all but out of options.

Another name mentioned as been Gent forward Laurent Depoitre, of whom Spurs scouts have supposedly been watching very keenly, however the 27-year-old Belgian doesn’t seem to be the energetic frontman that Pochettino seems to favour. Depoitre was on target for Belgium in their recent 4-1 win over Andorra, and is said to be available for around £7million.

However, for once it would be nice to see Pochettino get the target he actually asks for – rather than another Mussachio/Fazio, Stambouli/Schneiderlin kind of deal.

  2. Nevermind Perez, rubbish performances tonight away to Anderlecht by Trippier, Lamela, N'Jie (looks like a total waste of money) and the manager Poch. All must be on borrowed time, and we must get rid of this dross!!!!!

Developing a good consistent squad takes time, especially a young squad. Take a break, sometimes the team will disappoint but in the long run we have a chance of having a spurs side that can challenge for top honors. Changing players and managers every year isn't the right way to go.
