I was watching Leicester and off the top of my head, Justin, Barnes, Maddison, Farfana, Tielemans. All from lower leagues or not rated as high as they should be and all showing real quality.

Then there’s the $200m Chelsea spent

Apologies Jose's Ghost..... no idea how my post got mixed into yours

In terms of Leicester's squad.... it will be interesting if they stay top6 for the next few years..... and consider a lower league, or cheap player, a gamble they are willing to take.
They are relatively new to the top6 and perhaps expectations were lower prior to them winning the PL.

I like the Hojbjerg signing. We effectively got rid of a lesser player and bought him for £3m to do a job.
As noted above...we have good players...but we need better helpers for them

What do you mean by lower leagues exactly? I thought you were speaking about the lesser English divisions

Tielemans and Farfana came through Ligue 1... the best exporter of football talent in Europe. Barnes is an academy product by the way.

I'm not buying how good their squad is (ours is patently better/more valuable)... but they are decent enough. They certainly have a good manager and are well coached but they're scraping it too... just not quite as badly as us presently.

    11th in shots
    9th most shots conceded
    7th in possession
    6th in touches
    6th best GK save %

The biggest difference between Leicester and Spurs though is the whopping 10 penalties they've already been awarded compared to our 3... while having only conceded 2 to our 4.

Very reminiscent of 2015/16 actually when referees were bending over backwards to award them spot kicks (13 in total) while refusing to hold them accountable at the other end (gave up 4). For a team that had so little of the ball they are outrageously skewed stats

    Not to worry

I agree about their squad vs ours in terms of overall not better or more valuable but they they have done very well. IMO we have 5 top players (Kane/Son/Regy/PeH/Lloris), 3 good players (Ndombele/Toby/Tanganga) and the rest that could be replaced and would not be missed. Lloris and Toby are getting on so need replacing at some stage soon. They have 3 very good players (Ndidi/Maddison/Tielemans) and and 8 good players (especially at FB) however not sure of their depth after that....In terms of lower league, you are right that Barnes was academy (loaned to WBA) but James (Luton), Farfana (St Etienne -bottom half league 1), Maddison (Norwich), Ndidi (Genk), Evans (WBA). We’re the examples I meant (looking at lower league position sides not big name signings from big name teams)

You know there's a tendency that the closer you look at something the more likely you are to find fault... ie. the more involved you are with something the less objective you become. That would seem to sum up some Spurs fans perfectly well. The grass may seem greener with Leicester but I can tell you it is most definitely not. Swap their squad with ours and those who've been waxing about how quality it is will be calling for everyone's head soon enough.

Take Tielemans... who I think is quite a good player... but there is a reason he couldn't get a game at Monaco and ended up at Leicester. He's good... but he's not that good. You mention we have a host of players who wouldn't be missed... but if the manager explicitly refuses to play them does that mean that they're intrinsically no good? Jose's word is not gospel as has been proven... he's blundered majorly on personnel many times. One lad may end up at PSG soon... I think you'll find that he is still very good. Another fellow who I know you can't stand would walk into Leicester's starting 11. But yes... Leicester deserve some credit... Rodgers in particular.

Our squad is what it is... we have plenty of good players and a few world class ones. Is it as good as City's? of course not... but when I see United and Leicester at the top of the table... when I consider all the points we've dropped from playing too negatively... then Spurs are definitely good enough to challenge this term (it is a very average league). Of course there are a few other sides who would be thinking the same but it would seem clear to me that failure to at least attain Champions League (regardless of a possible Carabao) will mean that our manager has been a dud.

That’s a fair summary, I think we are 3 good additions from being a really good side. As we are, we should be challenging the top 4 but not through our attractive to watch, we thought out approach to each game but rather the lack of consistency amongst the top 4.

At lot of ifs and buts at the moment but I would would much prefer a top place to the Carabao Cup which no one seems to actually want to win.

I actually think Tielemans would be a great addition to MF for us and if you are referring to Aurier as the player that would walk into their team (not sure if you are or not) then I 100% disagree. Both Castagne and Pereria are better than him as well as Justin who can play either side.

  9. Haha no I wasn’t thinking of Aurier though I think you are far too unkind to him. There’s a reason he is captain of Ivory Coast... a nation which always has some quality players at any given time. On his day... which is more often than not... he is a good fullback in both directions. Yes prone to ill discipline which is what people remember most but we could definitely do much worse.

I was talking about Lucas. Perhaps too much of a lightweight for the physicality of the Premier League to be perfectly fair but you can bet your house were he at Leicester Rodgers would be rotating Albrighton and Barnes through him and not the other way round.

Albrighton has never even been capped for England... do you think he would have ever got a game for Brazil?

Oooh haha Lucas or Albrighton....that’s like asking which leg would you prefer to have removed :)

They swapped him for Pereira though who is way better than Moura

The Ali saga goes on will he go or will he stay.If he goes will Mourino regret it eventually as we tend to forget he got rid of Debruyne and Salah who later both won the player of the year in the premiership.

It's always a risk, but both the players you cite were pretty anonymous at Chelsea, whereas Alli was brilliant five years ago at Spurs, gave us a couple of great seasons, and then tailed-off, in fact fell off a cliff, and hasn't really shown more than very brief glimpses of his MK Dons form since 2018. People always wheel-out the old cliche that form is temporary but class is permanent when Alli is being discussed, but how much time can an under-performer be allowed to come good? Against Marine (Marine!), he supposedly stood-out, but I couldn't see it; yes, a decent ball for one of Vinwhatever's goals, but otherwise he consistently slowed our attacks by holding onto the ball instead of making a quick offensive pass, and the opposition were non-league FFS!
I've been trying to remember any players from our past who've badly lost form over a long period and then recovered it, and I'm struggling; Cyril Knowles (my all-time favourite Spurs player) was in the doldrums for a long period in the late '60s, but eventually came back better than ever, but there were far more whose decline was irreversible - Bobby Smith, Martin Chivers, Garth Crooks, Alan Brazil, and so many others, right up to Palacios, Sandro, and most of the Bale Seven. I'd cash-in while Alli's still worth something, because his transfer value has already halved since 2018, and the precedents are not good!

Only at Spurs do we afford a never ending opportunity to players that don't cut the mustard, return any positive consistency whether in availability/output or live off 1 performance in 10 at best.

Dele thinks he's owed a spot in the team and sulks when he doesn't get it, or doesn't get to stroll around doing as he pleases.

The Manchild needs moving on along with the other duds n pretenders, they don't need time or the team being built around their flash in the pan talent.

Only at Spurs are failures held in such high regard and given licence to con a living out of our 1st team/squad.

We are a professional football club not a convalescent home for failed talent or no talent at all

Just shows how the combined might of our home grown Academy system and our external player recruitment programme has been so bad over recent years, such that with so much dead wood you have little choice but to stick with some of them. I look at some of the young Gooners playing regularly and wonder when we will ever see the same at our club.

Team selection tonight not my idea.Midfield Winks and Sissoko where is the creation. Why no Rondon in defence.Bale and Moura both need to do something to convince me they deserve to be in squad let alone team.I know it’s only Wycombe but don’t be the only team to get done by lower league team.

Don’t say I did not tell you the first half was awful.Bale scores after missing 3 good chances Moura as usual produces nothing until one good ball for the goal Sanchez looks lost and winks his usual non productive best.Vinicius has one of the worst first touches for a Brazilian with the ball bouncing off him at all angles. Please Jose take some responsibility for this mess and get into them at half time or bring on some better players for second half.

Wow ndombele.what a difference class makes.Winks scoring am I dreaming. The idiot commentator gave Winks man of the match.why can’t we start with a stronger team get in front then use subs.Still not impressed with our defence who were bullied throughout the game.

Wycombe were in it for about 20 minutes....but we were never really in trouble. We controlled the game as we would expect.

Vini, Winks & Sanchez are awful. (and yes Winks scored). and down the middle spine!.... someone buy them please.

Bale is getting better. his change of pace a couple of times was nice to see. he had 4 good chances which I would expect better finishes from. hopefully that will come if he gets pitch time.
(but he does look a bit like he's just glad he's being paid and not being at Madrid)

When people blow smoke up this squads arse like it should be winning the league etc
Do people not see or realise that with out Kane Son N'Dombele etc this squad is the level of a struggling championship side.
We have so many painfully average to woeful players it's embarrassing and even more embarrassing when fans go into melt down about playing style, you can only work with what you've got.

Anyway comfortable win in the end through to the next round which will be a much more difficult fixture.
