Jan Vertonghen has been linked with a move away from Tottenham Hotspur for a number of months now but the latest reports suggest the Belgian may remain a Lilywhite after all.

Barcelona have been strongly linked with a move for the 27-year-old while the noises coming out from White Hart Lane suggested the defender may depart this summer.

    New deal on the horizon

However, Evening Standard report that Spurs have no interest in selling the Belgian and in fact are working on preparing him a new deal.

Mauricio Pochettino views Vertonghen as a key part of his plans and wants the defender to remain at the club.

Therefore, despite talk linking him with a move to the Catalan club, it seems the former Ajax captain will be offered a new contract which would make him one of the highest earners at the club.

Vertonghen starred in the 2014 World Cup for Belgium and is currently on a three-week break following his participation in the tournament.

    Wage increase

However, when he returns it is expected that he will be keen to follow in the footsteps of goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and put pen-to-paper on a new deal.

Vertonghen currently earns £40,000-a-week but will see his wages improved to £60,000-a-week should he agree a new deal.

Sky Sports also insists Tottenham will not be selling Vertonghen and they have revealed that Spurs have not been contacted by Barcelona regarding the Belgian.

    No Barcelona move

That is despite Vertonghen’s agent Mustapha Nakhli recently failing to reject that his client could move to the Camp Nou.

Spurs are said to be unconcerned with Nakhli’s comments and it appears that Pochettino will start the season with Vertonghen as an integral part of his team.

Tottenham have failed to make any new signings so far but it already appears the club are willing to be patient with last summers signings and by keeping Lloris and now Vertonghen, they are showing big plans are in place for the club.

If JV does sign a new deal then I will see that as a more positive step than
Hugo signing a new deal for the following reasons. 1 there are a genuine lack of top class centre halves about and many over priced ie Lovren but spurs could easily sell our no1 and sign a cheaper top class keeper begovic vorm reina krul spring to mind 2 Jv obviously had issues at spurs and unsettled the squad and for him now to sign a new deal would indicate them issues have now been resolved which is a good thing for sure and must be down to poch.
