If PSG pay up, should we let Lloris leave?

In unsurprising fashion, the papers once again report that oil-rich Paris Saint Germain are increasing their interest in Spurs shot-stopper Hugo Lloris - all of which will culminate a summer bid being made.

Despite only returning to the fold at St Mary's this weekend (due to a recent injury), the French number one has been a hot-topic on the back-pages - as words such as 'Champions League Football', 'release clause' and 'wanting-out' fill up the word-count in articles.

Of course this is all speculative stuff, but there is often no smoke without fire - and Spurs fans will unhappily admit, that with Daniel Levy at the helm - there is always a chance of your star player(s) being sold sooner or later.

    French connection

It wasn't until recently that the topic of Lloris possibly leaving for the French Capital has been given a bit of va-va-voom. PSG, under their Qatari-owners, find themselves on a star-recruiting quest and having the nation's football figure head, France captain Lloris, in their ranks - would certainly fit the bill.

Last week, The Guardian ran a story stating that Lloris had asked to leave North London on the basis of wanting Champion's League football. This was quickly refuted by Mauricio Pochettino, who stated on the matter: "Hugo wants to play the Champions League here for Tottenham and everything else is just rumours.

"Nothing is true and nothing has changed with the situation. He is happy here and wants to reach the Champions League with Tottenham; that is his dream.
    "

Although I am a fervent believer that Lloris is loving his time at The Lane, one matter raised in The Guardian's piece added a cloud of doubt to my thought. This was that it was "not lost" on Lloris that all of his French teammates play Champion's League football, and he does not - despite being national captain.

Although it may be Hugo's 'dream' to play top-level club football with Spurs, there is no proof on the pitch to suggest that we, Spurs, will be able to make that dream of his a reality anytime soon!

    Money talks

Today, Goal's Graeme Bailey has expanded further on the Lloris-to-PSG possibility. First Bailey tells us what we already know - that Lloris has no minimum-fee release clause in his contract, something which is a big no-no in Daniel Levy's book of business.

The main revelation of the article is that if we are Champions League-less again (and we surely will be), it will be "increasingly difficult" to convince him to stay - paving the way for Laurent's Blanc side to bid a whooping €56 million (£40 million).

As a result, a bid of that magnitude would not only pose serious questions to Daniel Levy, but also the Spurs faithful - as no matter how highly we rate Lloris; £40 million for a keeper, even one as good as Hugo, is an extraordinary amount!

These questions should and will be asked sooner or later, as even though this is all paper-talk at present, we know for a fact, that PSG have the sort of money quoted by Bailey. And just like previous players exiting Spurs have shown - there is often a basis for rumours of big-money moves to European football's elite.

    A smart spend & an in-form Vorm

One of the most important things to remember, is that if this situation comes to a head - we cannot not let our love for Lloris cloud our judgement. It's with a heavy-heart that I admit, that I'd not begrudge Daniel Levy for parting with our number 25's services for a fee as monumental as £40 million.

However, a potential sale engineered by Levy would have to be followed up with certain actions. If we did take the quoted £40 million from PSG, I'd want to see that money re-invested into the squad in the smartest manner possible. This translates to buying Premier League proven players e.g. Morgan Schneiderlin, in positions where we are weak - with no haggling, no last-minute deals and no missing out come 11pm August 31st.

It's also important to remember than in current number two, Michel Vorm, we have a good goalkeeper - one who will rediscover his best form after a consistent run of games. Although not in the same bracket as Lloris, Vorm is in no-way out of his depth when starting between the Spurs sticks.

Whether Daniel Levy will take the money and spend, or whether Vorm will prove an adequate replacement, remains to be seen. But one thing is for certain - the Lloris-leaving rumours won't go away anytime soon Spurs fans. Watch this space!

I'd hate to see Hugo leave us - even if it was for something like £40M. Just look at how we wasted most of the Bale money, and I'm not so sure that wouldn't happen again (with or without Baldini at the club).
I agree that Vorm is a quality keeper, but nowhere near the same quality of Hugo.
Also consider how many times Hugo has saved us and our dodgy defence this season - I'm sure that we would be much further down the if Vorm was our number 1.

So, supposing that Hugo does go, then I'd much rather see the money invested in sorting out our defence than the middle or up front.

No, Hugo has all ready dismissed a move back to France. Vorm is not good enough.
it would send out totally the wrong message, and MP clearly wants him to stay.

  4. Returning to the French League would surely be a backward step for Hugo. We also must remember that PSG are in hot water re FFP. I think he will stay with us for at least one more season. If the worst happens and he does leave, we will need to invest in a new number one as for my money, Vorm is nowhere near the quality we need.

We can't let him leave we need to be stubborn and keep players and let MP keep building as if we do it will completely cancel out Poch's efforts to lay a foundation this year. Also I think he's committed enough to remain here one more season. If the worst does happen and he leaves for £40mn which I think is appropriate due to his importance for us, we should invest in Schneiderlin as I think he is so important for us and Fraser Forster. £40mn double deal.

Its inevitable Hugo will get bored of keep picking the ball out of the Spurs Net due to our 1 flawed tactic/formation and our truelly embarrassingly shocking defence.
His dreams of lifting the Europa League may also never be realised at the Spurs senior academy either.
Hel move on to a better ambitious side who deliver, dnt bottle it, dnt stock pile painfully average players, play on the big stage, win trophies etc.
Wel get good money when he does thanks to our wonderful Chairman squeezing every available penny from the deal. And then wel purchase 8 players at 5 mil each and wonder why were not making top 4 after our 'clever' league 1 and Seria A purchases.

Point is you keep diluting the talent the further away from the top teams you get, this in turn makes it harder to recruit better standard players.
Talent wants to play alongside other talent no one in europe is itching to play alongside ryan mason!
    (Sorry Mas)

I wouldn't be adverse to Lloris leaving for a bigger club providing that club IS NOT the red Mancs. They're sniffing around incase they lose DeGea. I'll never forgive Levy of he sells to the Mancs again!!

I'd snap thier hand off for 40m and reinvest it. Or 30m plus cabaye. Throw in rabiot for a season loan. Bring in Schneiderlin and miralles Rodriguez berahino and or Ings. Sell all the muppets but give lamela one last chance. Bring in two centre half's from stones wimmer howedes
    Dragovic alderweireld or Schaar.
Begovic would be a great replacement for hHugo.

Too late for Hugo... He is 28. He is going to be Spurs legend if he stays... If he goes, then he will be another keeper at MUFC at best, as he will never eclipse departing de Gea. The other options are even worse for Hugo. Too late. He is smart enough to make a decision to continue with Poch hoping to get to UEFA in Lilywhite... I meant "in Magenta".

Why not? Let's sell another of our top players so levy can line his pockets and show just how little ambition the club have.

Hugo has been immense for this club and has shown himself to be a true professional but unfortunately I cant see him staying around for too long and this idea that he wants to stay so he can play CL at Spurs ? c'mon FFS. That is his dream says Poch. It sounds nice but seriously we have to be prepared to let Hugo go. He's been very respectful and has given another year and even signed a new contract in good faith, but leave he shall. Why wouldn't he ? where's this team going under Poch ? It hurts to say it but this years defensive effort has been an utter shambles and an embarrassment to a player with the professionalism of Hugo Lloris. In fact if we had a few more in the team and that includes the manager with his professionalism, his backbone and his courage we wouldn't need to be talking about him wanting to leave.

Agree but there will be plenty lining up for his services and we are gonna have to suffer thru the media bollox and hype.
Even those wanderers are winding themselves up and think they are in with a chance.

£40m more like €40m or just under £30m. Besides that there is the Euros next year in France. Do you honestly think he'll play another season as the French captain in the Ropey League. Don't think he'll be the captain if he stays. Also our buy to sell policy usually means our better or most profitable players get sold.

Bye Bye Lloris its been real.

The runours surrounding Thauvin seem to be gathering pace. Anyone know much about him? Sounds like a talented player who can play across the attacking mid 3 berths which worries me. Would prefer an out and out left mid or right mid personally. Also linked with Angelo Ogbonna of Juve who again is another primarily left sided centre half which again spells danger for Jv

I love all these 'linked to Spurs' players that never come to anything !!! Depay was 'linked' to us - but LFC or |MUFC both want him !!! We'll all be disappointed again starting next season when our targets went elsewhere and we got the scraps or nothing at all. Then another 'transitional season' begins while other cubs bulked up .......... Same old, Same old !!!!
