Now that Michael Dawson has signed with Hull City, Spurs have the captain’s role to fill. Let’s take a look at the candidates.

    First Choice: Hugo Lloris

The Frenchman is the obvious choice as he wears the captain’s band for France and has done so recently for Spurs. It’s always an interesting choice to name your goalkeeper the captain of the team, as he is frequently not conveniently located to get in the referees ear.

But, as far as leadership goes, Hugo steered France to an impressive run in the latest World Cup after that side was an absolute shambles in 2010. He’s got a strong voice, he’s well respected amongst his teammates, he’s one of the best keepers in the world, and he’s my choice to captain Tottenham Hotspur.

    Other Choices

Jan Vertonghen is a leader along the back line and if Mauricio Pochettino wants to continue to have a central defender as his captain, Jan is the logical choice. He commands authority from the younger defenders around him and he is always an example of “how to play the right way.” His experience in Belgium and his captaincy at Ajax should also factor into the decision. If Hugo gets the captaincy, Jan should be first choice when the Frenchman sits.

Aaron Lennon has been a faithful servant to the club and has worn the captain’s armband on a few occasions. If Poch wants to stick with someone with years of experience at Spurs, then Lennon would be a fine choice. The problem is, will Aaron even get enough time on the pitch to warrant such an honour?

French central defender Younes Kaboul has been awarded the captain’s band on a few occasions and certainly warrants some discussion in this conversation. There is no doubt that he is respected by his teammates and that goes a long way. On his day, he can command a back line with poise and grace, but when things don’t go his way, it’s common to see him with a silly yellow, and mud on his face. Will he have any credibility with the referees when that occurs?

People might say that Emmanuel Adebayor’s name doesn’t even belong on this list seeing as how at times in his Spurs career, Ade has seemed disinterested and lackadaisical. But on his day, when properly motivated, the guy can do wonders and he is absolutely adored by his teammates when he’s in that mood.

Maybe bestowing the honour of captain on Adebayor will bring out that kind of performance week in and week out. A deadly Adebayor for 36 more weeks sounds pretty good to me.

Mauricio has a big decision to make, but he seems to have a great grasp on the dressing room already, so any choice he makes will likely be an insightful one.

Even more left field......what about Kyle Walker? Dedicated to Spurs and a guaranteed starter.

Personally I wouldn't even want want to see Walker in the line up, let alone as captain.

Dier is a much more attractive proposition at RB.

Not a fan of goal keepers as captains, only candiates being Lloris and Vertonghen = Vertonghen captain

I really like the idea of Kyle Walker being Spurs captain one day, but probably think he is probably 2/3 years away from having the maturity to do so. I think it's a great shout, though.

Personally, I'd leave Kaboul with it. He is good enough to play every week, knows the club and its expectations as much as anyone, and seems highly respected by those within the dressing room. He has a presence, stature and a demeanour/persona that appears to lend itself perfectly to the role, and as a consequence of this, I see no reason to change. I suspect that it is no coincidence that he has long been deemed 'stand-in' captain by those who have managed him at Spurs, and therefore he seems an OBVIOUS fit.

Pochettino has allowed Younes to wear the armband throughout pre-season, and in the opening two games of the campaign. I'd be VERY surprised if he bothers making a change in that department now that Dawson has officially vacated the position.

I mean lets be honest, MD has only been a Spurs player, since the season began, in name only, with Mauricio giving no indication that he was ever going to choose the CB.

Listen it's 2014 now, and the importance of a club captain probably isn't as significant as it once was. I think the fact that MP left Dawson with the title of club captain DESPITE having absolutely no intention of picking the Englishman tells you everything you need to know about how much importance Poch gives the captaincy.

I would expect to see the armband passed around the likes of Kaboul, Lloris, Lennon and Vertonghen depending on fitness, performance, and obviously selection - thoroughout the course of the season.

Lloris deserves it. I'm not sure why people think a gk can't be a good captain? Lloris has already proved it at international level just as Casillas, Zoff and others have before. Besides which I think you need leadership and strong personalities all over the pitch. all those names above will be needed across the season to show their leadership qualities despite not being the club captain.

P.s. Just seen utd concede a 4th goal against mk dons - hahahahahaha

Yeah great lets make the Incredible Sulk captain. The man who last season hardly bothered, made Ade look keen.I dont care if you dont like the manager, toilet attendant or what, you play your guts out for the team and that average piece of monge did,nt.I wouldnt have him in the team let alone captain.

Keepers can definitely be captains. Both Peter Schmeichel and Oliver Khan were great goalkeepers and great captains. If the back 4 have someone behind them that they can trust and someone that can guide them, they can only be better. Man United fans will know well how long it took for them to replace Schmeichel and the confidence their defence lost without him. I think Hugo is a great choice, with Jan as backup.

Not usually a fan of goalies being the captain but in the case for Lloris as captain it makes perfect sense given his experience as captain of his national team as well as being arguably our best and most courageous player who will have to oversee and lead a relatively new and inexperienced defence, he's also the most likely of all those players mentioned to play every game. Hugo for me but I wont be surprised to see Kaboul wearing the armband although he wouldn't be my choice. As for the others, Lennon ? will be a squaddie from here on, a decent one at that but a squaddie none the less, as for Ade, I wouldn't have a problem with him taking on a role as a senior player who works his socks off and has the ability to organise and encourage his team mates as well as being prepared and able to give a bullocking when necessary. What this team needs is a core of strong characters, players who take on the responsibility of being senior players and seasoned professionals, players like Jan should be one of those players so I think he needs a massive improvement in attitude before he see's the armband.

  14. What is SuperJan gonna do as captain when he doesn't like a ref's decision? Start sulking? Make noises about wanting Champion's League football? I firmly believe the honour of captaining my beloved Lilywhites should be bestowed upon one Hugo Lloris...The Boss.

There is no outstanding candidate, Loris is first choice for me. Vertongen is always playing on the risky side of being booked so is not reliable. The others are nondescript with the exception of Eriksen, team players don't necessarily make leaders so with little choice it's Loris.

Lloris will be sold. If not this window, then the next or so. But I would still give the captaincy to him. It is a transition period for Spurs anyway. After him it is either Kaboul or Jan. Eventually Dier. COYS!!
