On the 18th May 2017 the BBC headlined the following post-match report:

“Harry Kane scored four times as Tottenham produced another superb performance to sweep aside Leicester City. Though Chelsea ended their Premier League title hopes last week, there was no let-up from Mauricio Pochettino's side, who won for the 25th time in the league this season.”

Fast forward just over six months and how we would wish for another performance like that. We were on fire, and the Foxes weren’t, as they were obviously ready for the beach. Sonny scored two great goals either side of half time and Harry was on fire with two close range efforts, followed by two 20 yarders late in the game.

However, we arrive at tonight’s return in very mixed form, with the Madrid and Dortmund victories interspersed with poor efforts against Manure, the Wanderers and The Baggies. 4 points from 12 has seen us fall out of the top four and the performances in all of those games was simply not good enough.

So where do we go from here, starting with tonight. I’m going to suggest a return to a back four, as with Dier looking out of sorts a back four of Aurier on rotation, Sanchez, Verts and Rose if his head is right, if not Davies. We need to be mindful that they have stacks of pace in Gray, Vardy and Mahrez, so players like Rose, Aurier and Sanchez should be able to combat that,

I think it’s time for one of either Dele or Eriksen to be benched. Their league form has been poor and we need to trigger some change in the performance. I’m going to go for Winks and Dembele at holding midfield and start Sissoko with probably Dele, if Poch thinks he’s up for it. I understand Winks is facing a late fitness test, so hold Dier in reserve for his spot.

Up front Sonny behind H. I like Sonny and he’s looked in some sort of form lately, so look forward to him developing a partnership with Kane.

We know how successful the high press was at home last season and we were strong late in the season away on the break. This season, apart from the CL games and Liverpool that has been missing, certainly recently. Another loss would be bad news, for sure. What do I think will happen…..well if H is match fit I think we’ll just sneak it 2-1.

So what's going on? Dele and Eriksen both a million miles away from last season. Dele doesn't even have a first touch let alone anything else. We're definitely not pressing like last season. We're getting overrun in the middle and seem unable to control the game. Can't be CL surely because if we don't perform we won't be in it next season so the incentive is their for the Prem. What's going on?

Something badly wrong with t'lads this year - especially Alli. Hate to be on his case again, but from a star in the making (and a big one at that) he's turned into a 20 watt bulb, if there was such a thing. What was a hungry, talented lad, he's gradually gone through a tetchy phase of narking and niggling into a seemingly disinterested player who looks no more than average, contributing little or nothing. OK, played well against Real, but is there something to read in there ? Jury's out on him right now. From being a favourite of mine, he's slipped out of the rankings completely. Come on man - shape up. Eriksen, for me, blew hot and cold anyway. Difference is now he doesn't even do that. Played well against ROI..... but let's consider O'Neill's team before going overboard on E's performance.
Both are marvellous when the mood takes, but it doesn't look like it's taking, does it. Liabilities at present.

Like your style GMc. Agree with everything. They've had their heads turned no? How quickly our Tottenham stars over the years forget who got them onto the world stage! Sad but that's football. Snag is we seem unable to break that cycle. Wages, wages, wages.

Shock horror Top players earn less, win nothing at Spurs and have their heads turned.

But they'll always have that Cup 'run' / 'challenge' to look back on.

Aurier and Sissoko in the starting X1 is just asking for trouble. I'd agree with Winks and Dembele in midfield but we still need more width against a team which sits deep. Whatever happened to N'Koudou - he might resemble a headless chicken at times, but a headless chicken has more life in it than some lately.
We will probably see something of Lamela tonight - hip, hip - well, just another hip.

With one up top a back three is the more attacking formation.. Dier Sanchez Vert Aurier Rose Dembele Sissoko Alli Eriksen Kane.. 541 diamond.. that's our strongest most physically gifted lineup at the moment

That was such a painful first 45 I've just listened too. Tactically inept for me. With 3 at the back in disarray, he should have changed it after 10 minutes, before the damage was done. Second rate Poch....and others.

If I were not the relentlessly upbeat ray of sunshine that I clearly am, I might start to think that the wheels are well and truly coming off - I very well remember how we beat Derby (reigning champions at the time!) 3-2 away towards the end of the '75/76 season, and then lost the the equivalent match early the following season 8-2, our worst ever defeat at the time. I never imagined that a 6-1 victory could be reversed so comprehensively within a few months, but it doesn't look good sixty-odd minutes into this game (but even I don't seriously think we'll be relegated, as we ended up being in 1977). Perhaps a stunning turnaround is happening as I'm typing this, in which case viva Poch and COYS.

You should actually watch the game before ripping the manager for his tactics.

How did Spurs lose that? Two worldies from Leicester.. and our own extreme profligacy in front of goal and the final third.

Overall the team is bereft of confidence.. Eriksen woefully hungover.. Alli's talent not matching his ambition.. Kane ineffective until the obligatory goal.. I could go on.. still we missed four clear cut chances.. that was the game.

Doesn't look good.. Spurs can't score at Wembley. Next year we will be playing in unfamiliar surroundings again as well. Maybe we missed the boat these last two years. Still best Tottenham team I can ever recall seeing.
