How do you tell whether the transfer window is a good one or not?

So my cousin and I were watching the visit of the Swans last season at The Lane, and given we were close to one of the goals, saw their great lumbering centre forward fairly close up.

He was struggling to be fair and my cousin turned to me as we were walking back to the car and commented on Swansea and said "how bad was that Llorente bloke" ......so I said "be careful what you say, one day he might be here.

I think I should have put some money on it. Now he's our new striker. It's a funny old game isn't it.
On a more serious note, let's take the opportunity to reflect on how the transfer window has turned out for us.

The Aurier and Sanchez signings clearly look to have strengthened the squad. If Aurier is as good as some of the reports, if he stays on the right side of the law, he's good business at less than half what we got for Walker.

Sanchez is athletic, quick, strong and young. Let us all hope that his acquisition is more to do with wanted to play three at the back and less about being a readymade replacement for Toby.

As for other two youngsters, time will tell.

Back to Llorente. Part of me sees his acquisition as bring similar to the one where we saw Louis Zaha and Cliff Hill arrive. Whilst the prices paid may have changed, it feels a little déjà vu. Don't get me wrong, you can't ignore the fact that he scored 15 Premier League goals last term, which will be good enough for me if we see the same return on our investment. However, we don't typically play to the strengths of a giant central pivot, so hopefully that signals that Poch is planning to make more use of width and pace, absent so far in the early games.

So how do you tell whether the transfer window is a good one or not. Yet again we didn't actually spend any net money, so there is a school of thought that says that statistic on its own might lead one to conclude that the overall strength of the squad is no better. Defensively we should be, up front it is far from what we had hoped for. No creative midfielder to back up Eriksen, no left sided paceman. Looking around at the top teams, apart from the Gooners, I'd say they have all managed to strengthen their squads and with marquee signings, which we clearly can't afford, or don't want to if you're DL.

So where does that leave us for the first half of the season. Totally reliant on Kane and Dele goals still, with Llorente in the wings. Janssen should have gone on loan, somewhere, anywhere, to give him game time and to build some confidence. We need Rose back soon and Aurier showing his pace, to exploit the wide open spaces of Wembley.

My heart wants me to see another 5-0 against the Swans next week, with Llorente opening his account against his old club. My head feels otherwise. As Greavsie would say, It's a Funny Old Game.

Not overly impressed with the signings, I think the 38/42 mil spent on Sanchez should've been spent further up the pitch.

Aurier looks a good signing but comes with a bit of ? Over his antics will he buy in to and fit the Poch regime?

Llorente is a player that has the ability to find the net if given the correct service how he fits into the high press with no crossing is anyone's guess.

The youngster Foyth don't know enough about to comment hopefully it works out.

Overall I can't really see how we've strengthened significantly were still gonna get times this season where we will come up against a resilliant side and plan A is not working then we are gonna look to the bench and it's still got no Game changers.

The lack of pace and options in the side will yet again stiffle our chances of silverware.

This window - Sissoko and Lamela should've been moved on and replaced with some flair/speedy attackers.

An average transfer window designed to ensure that we return to White heart lane still in the Premiership and if not a top four place a Europa league spot. Lets just get back to White Heart lane in one piece

Paying £40+million on a central defender barely out of his teens with one season under his belt strikes me as the gamble of all time - wasn't everyone raving about Caulker only a very few years ago? Paying a few mill for the potential of a teenage Bale or Alli is one thing, but a Spurs record fee for a kid? As for the others, nothing at all to get excited about - perhaps our new Ivorian full back might be almost as quick as Walker, but he's got a hell of a lot of baggage for a young man, and I prefer my defenders to come out of the dull and dependable school typified by Alderweireld or King rather than the 'what's coming next?' style of BAE or Chimbonda - hopefully he'll keep his antics off the pitch, but what's £23 million in today's market? Little more than a Wimmer apparently - sheer madness!

I agree with Felon82, Spurs need a speedy wide MF. Or two. But not as much as the right fullback/ wingback. Trippier failed to convince that he is the Walker replacement as of yet. So Aurier is that palyer that has to fill Walkers shoes. Should that work, then the acquisition is a boon, since he is younger and much less than Walker. But if it doesn't work for some reasons Aurier will cost Levy much less than 38 millions, so he can flip him for a profit or break even next summer. Everything, however, points out the the boy is a diamond in the rough and could be used right away.
Llorente is needed to have planB you so much complaining about being absent from Poch. He will play from the bench very much the way Fellaini does or, dear I say... Giroux. He will make our corner kicks more meaningful, providing the necessary air dominance Spurs currently lack. Having Word Cup and Euro champion is not so bad. When did it happen last time that players of such pedigrees would sign for Spurs?

On the face of it looks like we have barely strengthened if at all.
However in foyth aurier and sanchez we have signed 3 potential world class players. However id have prefered an already world class attacker or damn near to.
Dont get the llorente deal at all given his lack of pace and being wrong side of 32. Poss a panic buy or if i cant have the player i want ill sign one for the sake of it signing.
In the final hour of the window i was thinking if we land barclay here its been a belter if not its more of an 'as you were' window.
I agree now its a case of get back to the lane on one piece and hopefully top four with more rumblings of unrest with tobys representative talking about leaving to add fuel to danny rose' fire.

Only time will tell if our signings come good in the mean time we should settle this problem with Toby, his agent is mouthing off but as long as it is not Toby doing the talking things are not to bad but DL must get it sorted..It will be interesting to see what formation Poch will use at the weekend..

At present we look a side in between two systems. The 4231 and the 3421. I understand the need for diff systems but we have no default. Even in each system there is little variation. So teams can work us out once our team sheet is announced.
With the outlay for Sanchez i expect him to be starting games soon so that would indicate a preference to a bk 3. Also the aurier signing with his extra pace power and athletism compared to trippier who as i predicted would be found out and has shown in particular a wing bk roll.
The problem then becomes eriksen and alli are fighting for space in the no 10 roll and its too congested in there with dembele and wanyama/dier. Add to that the opposition has 3 cms there are seven players in midfield in a given game. In the chelsea match is was so tight in there u could throw a hula hoop over the lot of them. Its suits other teams but it stiffles two of our holy trinity up top.

Let's hope big Fran that we've learnt by our mistakes of not using the width that midfield clutter created....fingers crossed.

Was noticable yesterday how high alli played up the park at times. Was almost playing CF at times. His movement and finishing are good enought to play that role be interesting to see that pan out.
Fantastic performance that aurier wanyama rose and dembele all will likely come back into the 11 when available.
Interesing how at three nil up llorente as with janssen still cant get a run out. What scenario if any will he het decent game time?
