Sadly I was sat on the stairs at a little after 5 this morning, iPad in hand watching the horror show that was Tottenham 2 Roma 3. Whilst the coverage was a little frantic, it mirrored the game, spoilt by a totally shite Ref. How bad was he. Answer – about as bad as we were.

Okay, so the highlights don’t tell you how it looked in real time, but for the life of me how did we get caught out so often. No shape, lacking in quality on the day…..and then there is the youth. I’ve been watching the little quotes being drip fed out, Poch converting what he’s been told by Mingy the Merciless, that he can’t spend any money on quality players. The market is mad for sure, but that doesn’t matter because we’re not paying the inflated prices period says the Chairman, translated into manager speak by MP.

Now the Yooof…….well what do we make of that. Carter-Vickers, Walker-Peters, Onomah. Do we honestly believe there is a place in the Spurs squad of 2017-18 for these players. Really. Are you sure? Onomah – the one thing I think I saw him do was kick off. He’s just not good enough, at least not for the cut and thrust of what will be our toughest season for many, many years. The one youngster who will come good is Winks, once he’s got his match fitness back – he’s maturing well. And I see we’re going to give Vince another season to prove himself. Well, he got a goal, but was it the touch of a classy striker…Mmmmm. Don’t answer that. The other thing that did look good was NKD on his right foot, using his base, skill and crossing ability to make Vince’s goal

Make no mistake, a season at Wembley will test the Club and the squad to the limit. The only time we’ve ever played well there was Chelski in the semi and we lost that one. Everybody but the Chairman know what is needed, and in truth he knows but just doesn’t want to spend the £70m of cash (at least) that he has built up in recent weeks. The squad needs another right back, possible a centre back, a striker, a creative midfielder. We need to fill at least three of those 4, perhaps sacrifice the centre back for now.

Perhaps I’ll wake up at 5 tomorrow and find that we’ve signed two Argies that we’ve never heard of…….that sounds like a good idea Poch, can you help.

I agree. I think this season will be a struggle between the larger pitch and UCL. It's possible that the players will have a drop in performance since they performed so brilliantly last year. And Wimmer is not a good player for a system that depends on a high press. Lastly, everyone else has improved. Top 6 is a reasonable goal, but I don't see this squad competing for a title for 3-4 years, until the squad gets used to the new stadium.

The Man U team of Giggs, Beckham, Scholes et al is the only truly successful side I can remember that was built on youth (even I'm too young for the original Busby Babes!), and we're whistling in the dark if we think the kids who've so far performed poorly when given opportunities (many of them in Onomah's case) will do the business at Wembley. The list of over-hyped kids stretches from the legendary Shoemark in the '60s, through Holder in the '70s, Dick in the '80s, Caskey in the '90s, up to Bostock in recent years, and then there are the near misses, like Garry Brookes, Mickey Hazard or Nicky Barmby, who never quite lived-up to the early promise - sometimes, Mr Levy, you just have to bite the bullet, and pay for the finished article (but if you haven't learned that yet, you never will).

Sadly I'll have to agree with you in how our youth played last night. Winks is the only one showing promise, Georgiou had a decent showing as well. Wimmer has lost all confidence, think we need to let him go and bring in another CB. Onomah, KWP....and maybe Vickers need to go out on loan and prove themselves. Vickers to me is sound, just the occasional mistake where he's caught out, sadly this preseason it has happened quite a lot. Like Sissoko, GK doesn't fit in Poch's style of play, he isn't versatile enough to come inside.

If we are able to let go of both Sissoko & GK, bring in Kovacic, Son and Lamela get healthy; we might have a chance on having a decent season at Wembley. Can't see us winning the prem, finishing top 4, going far in champions - past group stage, and maybe winning a cup. I'd take that, we desperately need to win something though.

I don't wanna hear any of the 'we don't need to buy any players' lot blaming the Wembley pitch for our short comings.
If you come through the academy and push for a start/place because your good enough then fine (Winks Kane etc)
If your not (Onomah CCV KWP Carroll etc) then you shouldn't be allowed near it.
People might wana spend their lives being patient and hoping for an average player to maybe improve but Winners that does not make.
We are a big Club why are we not prepared to buy the extra quality we need in favour of plugging holes with sub standard kids?

Last season it was glaringly obvious we had no decent back up or room to rotate properly and even with a European Campaign (as pitiful as it was) to contend with we werent miles off Chelsea. So it's clear what we need to improve and go that 1 extra, but wot have we done dawdled made excuses and now we're hoping the Academy is suddenly going to produce CL and Title winning quality over night.

Sadly I agree. But also I have to add we are not a big club. Its gonna be a long hard season firstly at Wembley and secondly with the lack of real investment and relying on kids. Vickers is a million miles away from the standard and needs a good championship loan. Onomah likewise. Walker Peters I'd keep but he would be my third choice full back so we need to strengthen there.
I agree with levy about the crazy market and understand that the stadium hinders us to match even the money little old Everton and Liverpool are waving around but I'm suggesting clever management like we've had previously with eriksen Jan wanyama Toby Hugo dembele. Surely we can afford the likes of kovacic Barkley in the 25m bracket which allow us to rotate. Iheanacho maybe. Harry Maguire or Gibson be an improvement on wimmer if he is to be sold. Can we really not prize a player like sessagnon from Fulham away the best young talent in the country for me. At present outside the first 11 we have little or no options.

The match against Roma critically underlines the importance of Eriksen

Have a read of this fantastic article. Sums us up. After finishing third followed by second and having the best 11 in the league, the best young manager, moving to a bigger stadium with the best young talent you would have thought the club would want to invest in two or three quality players early in the window that should have been identified from day one. Here we are back to square one standing still thinking if we get into the top four this year we will have over achieved.

Walker-Peters is going to be the starting right back for Tottenham for the next decade. I'd keep him to back up Trippier this season and focus on purchasing somebody who can play instead of Ericksen or with Ericksen. Kovacevic fits the bill. If Poch believes in Janssen then I'm willing to give him another chance to prove himself this season.

My sense is that Poch believes in Janssen only because Levy has told him he can't have another striker....we've all watched Vincent and we want him to succeed, but...

Nike Shirts 25mil a season, new shirt sponsor deal 35 mil a season, 148mil prem prize money, 36mil CL money, 70mil in player sales it's quite obvious we have no money and therefore should be waiting for last knockings.

I have no idea what game you were watching but the poor kid was caught out of position about 5 times or more during the Roma game. Rose had to go on loan to prove himself, so can Walker-Peters, and another point...someone to play instead of Eriksen? Our entire attacking style functions because of Eriksen, it's sad to see fans really undervalue how much he contributes to our team. Eriksen is probably the best attacking midfielder in the league, maybe tied with City's Silva. Nevertheless, I do agree that Kovacic would be a great addition, he actually tends to play a deeper role/ more like Dembele.

If we could bring in Kovacic, Juan Foyth, another RB...offload Sissoko and hopefully get a decent chunk of his fee that was wasted, Wimmer's a goner for me too. Next we need to resolve the Lamela situation, if he's healthy great, if not we need a bit more to strength our depth.

What a shocker last night. Without our two regular full backs from last season the defence looked very, very ragged....and that's being generous.

What is Levy trying to prove, that he can buy a new stadium with only a relatively modest level of borrowings, funded by hanging on to the big lumps of cash coming his way?

Come on man, get real. We're at Wembley for a season. If we get close to 40 points at home it will be a miracle. There was always a danger of this, but now it's oh so real....and still no 5 year deal for Toby...ffs!
